Cape Windjammers is a non-profit sail training organisation based in Cape Town, South Africa. The dedication and passion of voluntary crew fortify the power of off-shore sail training as a tool for developing life skills, leadership skills, and environmental awareness amongst South African youth. Our programmes target youth aged 16 to 25 from all social and cultural backgrounds, and we work in cooperation with local schools and civil society organisations.

Tomorrow we set sail!

After weeks of preperation we are ready for Cape Windjammer's first of three winter programs. The Howard Davis, which usually operates from the V & A Waterfront has sailed round Cape Point into False Bay. And after our crew training session on Saturday we're ready to set sail!

Nine youth from Izivunguvungu sailing school will be joining us for the first five days. During this time the youth will learn to sail the Howard Davis and along the way be taught about the environment around them. But this experience is far from what one would call a pleasure cruise. Youth will be responsible for all chores and duties on the ship, from cooking in the galley to cleaning the heads. If you'd like to know more about sail training as a teaching method, please follow this link.

Youth from Crystal House and Leap School will also be participating in this year's winter holiday program. To see more frequent updates please go to our facebook page.

marx_on_bowspritA year of open ocean awaits Marx Mohr who left Cape Town last week on board the bark Europa. The 18 year old Marx is sailed for two months on board the Canadian school ship Concordia as part of a Cape Windjammers initiative. Marx wanted more.
Hearing about the opportunity through Cape Windjammers, Marx jumped at the chance to Crew on board the Europa, a Dutch bark for a year. Quite an exciting prospect considering that he will be travelling from Cape Town to Europe, South America, Antarctica and finally back to South Africa again.
But this is more than just a pleasure cruise for Marx who intends on making a career out of sailing.

“This opportunity is a huge step in advancing my professional career. It provides not only training, but also sea miles. Without crossing an ocean nobody is taking you seriously and this will go far in giving me that experience.”

From the Cape Windjammers crew, good luck Marx!

Here's something different! Monde Sitole, one of Cape Windjammers' past trainees is Daring to Dream. Monde took part in the Class Afloat exchange from Cape Town to Bermuda in 2009.
